There his black BMW3 was driven against by a subsequent tram. The car floated to the right lane [remember you drive on the right inGermany normally ] and damaged two more cars(BMW,VW). blabla ( just the passangers of the other cars named) All three were injured lightly and went to the Uniclinic Magdeburg for ambulant care. Tokio Hotel's clean cut image may have won them millions of fans across the world, but it seems they're far from being the ideal teenage role models - especially drummer Gustav Schafer, who crashed his car into a tram! The 20-year-old musician was in his BMW 3-Series on Tuesday afternoon in the German city of Magdeburg when the accident happened. He reportedly overtook a line of traffic and drove straight over tram tracks which had been blocked off. His car was then hit by an oncoming tram, skidded into the right lane of traffic and hit two further cars. Schafer and his two passengers - Katharina Kretzschmar (29), the sister of SCM sport director Stefan Kretzschmar, and Denny E. (29) from Hamburg - were taken by ambulance to hospital, although they were only slightly hurt. The drummer may still be feeling pain, however, as he is set to be charged with bodily harm due to negligence. But he shouldn't let it get him down - he will appear with his Tokio Hotel bandmates at the European Music Awards in Liverpool, where they are up for two gongs. ---- I got worried then, I thought they may not come to Liverpool or people may be really hurt But its ok, they're still coming and everyone is fine! Kinda silly of Gustav though... xx

Looks like Gustav's accident is everywhere: Contactmusic.comTOKIO HOTEL - TOKIO HOTEL STAR IN CAR CRASH TOKIO HOTEL star GUSTAV SCHAEFER is recovering after crashing his car into a tram. The drummer was driving his BMW through Madgeburg, Germany on Tuesday (04Nov08) when he reportedly tried to overtake a line of traffic, drove over tram tracks and collided with an oncoming city tram and two parked cars. Schafer and his two passengers were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries. Schafer is still scheduled to perform with Tokio Hotel at the European Music Awards in Liverpool, England on Thursday (06Nov08). Source: www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/article/tokio%20hotel%20star%20in%20car%20crash_1085778BuzznetTokio Hotel Drummer Survives Car Crash Tokio Hotel drummer Gustav Schafer spent this past Tuesday afternoon in the hospital after colliding with a moving tram!! According to Bild, Schafer 'overtook a line of traffic and drove straight over tram tracks which had been blocked off,' while behind the wheel of his [very expensive] BMW 3-Series. An ongoing tram plowed right into him, the entire car skidded and proceeded to crash into two other vehicles. What a disaster! Following the incident, which took place in Magdeburg, Germany, Schafer was taken away by an ambulance, along with passengers Katharina Kretzschmar and Denny E. All three are fine although Bild reports that Schafter will be 'charged with bodily harm due to negligence.' Ouch! There is currently no word on if anyone aboard the tram (or in the other two vehicles involved) was hurt during the collision, but we here at Buzznet are glad that everyone made it out safely! Recently, singer Bill Kaulitz received one of the wackiest-yet-highest honors ... his own wax figure at Madame Tussads in Berlin, Germany. Meanwhile, Tokio Hotel is nominated for 'Best Act Ever' at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, going up against Green Day, U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Rick Astley. Lucky for us, we get to vote on who should be victorious in each category. The 2008 MTV Europe Awards will take place on November 6 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Do you think Schafter should be charged for the accident, or be excused? Source: www.buzznet.com/musicnews/tokio-hotel-drummer-survives-car-j3326061/

Kate is right. Luckily no one was seriously injured but the accident was his fault. I didn't quite understand what had happened because I didn't get what was meant by "blocked" or "closed off" tram lane so I looked through the internet for some more information and found another article on express.de. It says the accident happened on Halberstädter Straße. I'm not too good with street names but this one sounded familiar. Turns out it's nearby where I used to live (only a minute away by car):
I lived where A is and Halberstädter Straße is B. I actually drove on that street every second week to get to PE lessons with my friends. In fact that's the street I was driving along and waiting in traffic when 9/11 was happening (coincidently Claire and I were indirectly talking about that street a few hours after Gustav's accident without even knowing about it). It's one of the bigger and busier streets. Quite a lot of traffic and lots of traffic lights. It takes some time to move along on there in general. So that's why I agree with Kate on driving also being about patience.
Here's a satellite pic of one random part of Halberstädter Straße:
As you can see the tram rails run in the middle. In most cases tram lanes are also used by cars in Magdeburg which means one has to pay a lot of attention most of the times. Not only while driving but also as a pedestrian (because you always have to watch out for pedestrians/cars etc and trams... it's safest to stick to traffic lights wherever possible anyway. ) Anyway, from what I read Gustav must have been driving on the right lanes (maybe making his way into the city centre). The article says that one of the traffic lights turned red, causing a queue (as it does when traffic is waiting). Magdeburg police were quoted saying that Gustav suddenly turned left onto the hatched tram lane (similar to what you can see in the pic, cars can drive on the tram lanes but e.g. near traffic lights the lanes are partly hatched indicating that it's not allowed for cars to use them). For whatever reason Gustav did this, it was wrong and clearly his mistake. When doing this he must've overlooked the tram that was coming up behind him and despite the full brake application the tram crashed into his car which was pushed to the right and back into the queue where it damaged two other cars. The street had to be closed off for an hour. Luckily the tram was also only damaged slightly. However, it was reckless of Gustav and it means trouble. E.g. if he's still on his two year probationary period for his license he will very likely lose it. That's among other things that could happen. It was really very lucky no one got seriously injured. I hope he doesn't get into trouble with Stefan Kretschmar whose sister was in the car with Gustav. He's a big guy. (The one I posted pics of in the Magdeburg pictures thread.)
