Thought we might as well start this thread, eh Kraig?
Right, some of the best gay books out there IMO:
As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann - quite possibly one of the best books in the world. It's historical fiction, it's gay fiction, it's heart breaking fiction. I cannot recommend this enough. It has a lot of mature themes and it's NOT an easy read, but it's undoubtedly one of the best books I've ever read. Bearing in mind, my very favourite book is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, I don't say this lightly. It's about the relationship between two men that meet as soldiers in the Civil War. It can also be read as an analogy for the political situation in 17th century England.
Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx - I read this short story before the movie was even thought of. It's incredible and if you saw the movie and liked it, you will love the short story more. It's more powerful, shocking and it's quite possibly one of the best short stories written. I think everyone knows this story? LOL.
The Frontrunner by Patricia Nell Warren - if you are looking for a starter 'gay' novel, you can't get better than this. It's not a difficult book to read and it covers almost everything you'd expect from a 'gay' book. It's heart breaking (as all good gay novels are) and ground breaking. Historically, it was one of the first mainstream gay novels. You have to remember that when you read it because the period is obvious, it's not high quality writing, but it's heartfelt and very special. There's a script floating around Hollywood and I would love to see it made into a movie. It's about a young gay man who is a runner that starts a relationship with his coach.
The Persian Boy by Mary Renault - if you like historical fiction (like me!) this is quite an outstanding novel. It's part of a trilogy about Alexander the Great, but I read it as a stand alone novel and it works perfectly as one. It's about Alexander's relationship with a eunuch called Bagoas. It's one of those that will catch in your throat. It's passionate and beautiful and set to a back drop of battle and meyhem.
That's all for now as I've got Razzle arriving shortly. LOL. But, I want any recs if anyone has any and I can rec more if anyone wants. Like I said - I know a lot (though there are massive gaps in my knowledge and I haven't read anything in some time.)
