Most of you will already have heard of the twins' involvement in a campaign for PETA. Here's a summary of a few things about this topic:

The twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz of Germany's internationally most successful rock band Tokio Hotel to protest with an elaborate photo opportunity against the use of animals in the entertainment industry: "Slaves of the entertainment industry: [get] Wild animals out of the circus!" is the slogan with which the musicians participate in a PETA campaign for the first time now.

Bill: Look, we are vegetarians and most important we don't want animals to be tortured, to live in a circus....Take a look: animals have to be in such a position! They are responsible for the amusement of people and that's why we're doing this photo-shooting today and put ourselves in chains.
At first sight people are amused by watching such things and believe the animals have fun, but the truth is totally different. Their lives are not appropriate to the species and for "walking in a circle like this" there's some training needed plus beating.
Tom: There are always parents going to a circus with their kids. And the smallest of our society have no clue of what's going on, for sure! That's why parents have to be aware of these bad things.
Bill: And to add this, there are lots of circus sorts with human artists and all.
Second scene
Tom: Now there's the second shoot! Now we're locked in a cage.
interviewer: How do you feel being locked in like an animal? Okay?
Tom: No, I don't think so. For an animal it must be the worst. I mean were inside of this for only 10 mins to take this photo. That's enough though.
Bill: In general we notice a lot of animal "use" in the business whether it's music videos, TV shows etc. That's something we totally were against!
I mean an animal is simply locked in and doesn't know why. And and I really can't stand to even imagine this, then I get teary eyes immediately!
Bill: The first dog we rescued out of a animal shelter was badly injured and had scars on its ears because the owner stubbed out his cigarettes on the dog's ears. And he had worse teeth because he only got beer to drink when he was a puppy and so on. Those are experiences are imprinted upon us.
Tom: Absolutely!
Bill: "Hey! We are Bill and Tom from Tokio Hotel and we support PETA! Don't let wildlife animals down, give them their freedom back and don't put them into circus! If you're interested, then to on peta.de and inform yourself!"

The musicians also want to address parents who still often take their children to a circus showing animal performances. "Especially parents need to raise their awareness in this case." according to Tom.
The two vegetarians also wonder about the Federal Government: On 17 October 2003, the Bundesrat (upper house of the German parliament) consentaneously sent a clear signal to the federal government and voted in a resolution to ban wild animals in the circus (especially elephants, monkeys and bears). However, the federal government still does not make a move and lets animal cruelty continue!
A recent representative survey of the Society for Consumer Research in Nuremberg (April 2010) clearly shows that two thirds of the population don't think wild animals in circuses are contemporary anymore. And the Federal Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons in April 2010 also spoke up clearly and demanded the ban of wild animals in traveling circuses due to reasons of animal welfare.
While European countries such as Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Bulgaria, etc. have already imposed a ban on wild animals, the federal government remains passive and thus ignorant of animal suffering.
Many celebrities have already supported a ban on wild animals.

After all, we are vegetarians and erm, above all we don’t want animals to suffer from cruelty and that animals have to live in a circus and are responsible for people’s amusement.

Supposedly the Kaulitz brothers have also often felt like animals in a cage themselves. The constant fear of crazy stalker gangs: one of the reasons that Bill and Tom left Germany and have moved to the USA now. They had been followed and threatened by fanatic fans for months.
Tom: Das waren einfach Menschen, die… Ja, extrem, ja, gestört waren irgendwie. Die extrem Probleme haben mit ihrem eigenen Leben und irgendwie ja auch… Ja, die Hilfe brauchen, auf jeden Fall.
Those were just people that… Yes, who somehow were extremely disturbed. Who had extreme problems with their own lives and somehow also... Yes, who definitely need help.

However, here and now Tokio Hotel scream for help for a different reason. No, Bill isn’t hungry. Even though he got quite skinny. The twins fight for the species-appropriate keeping of animals.
Bill: ’N Tier versteht das ja nicht. Das ist einfach eingesperrt und, und ich kann das nicht ertragen. Wenn ich drüber nachdenke schießen mir sofort die Tränen in die Augen, eigentlich.
After all an animal doesn’t understand it. It just gets locked in a cage and, and I can’t bear it. Actually, tears immediately spring to my eyes when I think about it.
