Max: Traumhaft, dass ihr da seid. Euer neues Album „Humanoid“ ist draußen. Schreibt ihr die Songs komplett selber oder hat euch jetzt irgendjemand geholfen mit dem Album?
Fantastic that you’re here. Your new album “Humanoid“ has been released. Do you write the songs completely on your own or did somebody help you with the album now?
Bill: Also eigentlich haben wir das bei dem Album genauso gemacht wie bei den Alben davor auch schon. Also, wir haben vier Produzenten mit denen wir eigentlich fest zusammen arbeiten und eigentlich sind wir so’n, so’n ganz großes Team da, die echt zusammen sitzen im Studio und dann zusammen die Ideen ausarbeiten und jeder was in den Topf wirft so und das alles zusammen entsteht. Wir haben, erm, zum ersten Mal aber auch ’n paar andere Produzenten dazu geholt und erm, haben auch mit denen irgendwie mal ’n bisschen rumexperimentiert irgendwie um mal so’n, so’n frischen Wind einfach auch zu kriegen und mal auch so ’nen anderen Eindruck. Und das war auf jeden Fall mal ganz gut. Aber eigentlich generell sind wir halt so ’ne große Familie, die das alles zusammen macht.
Well, with this album we’ve actually done it the same [way] as we’ve also already done with the prior albums. Like, we’ve got four producers with whom we’ve actually established to work together and we’re actually like, like a pretty big team that really sits down together in the studio and then works on ideas together and like everybody is contributing something so that everything develops together. However, we’ve also, erm, got a few other producers involved for the first time and erm, have somehow just been trying out a few little things with them as well, just to also get a breath of fresh air and, like, a different impression. And that definitely was quite good just for a change. However, actually we’re just like a big family that does all of this together in general.
Tom: Ich helf’ Georg allerdings beim Bass-Einspielen im Studio zwischendurch halt immer so’n bisschen.
Though in between, I’m always helping Georg a bit with recording the bass in the studio.
Bill: Ja. Yes.
Tom: Eigentlich hab’ ich… Den größten Teil vom Bass hab’ eigentlich ich eingespielt auch für’s Album.
Actually I’ve… Actually I’ve recorded most parts of the bass for the album as well.
Max: Super, erm. *chuckling* „Lass uns laufen“ – aktuelle Single. Worum geht’s? Kurz zusammengefasst.
Great, erm. *chuckling* „Lass uns laufen“ – [the] current single. What is it about? Briefly summarised.
Bill: Erm, eigentlich ist es so’n bisschen… eigentlich der persönlichste Song so vom Album. Es geht so’n bisschen eigentlich um das Leben was wir führen, ja? Also erm, im Englischen ist es ja „World behind my wall“ was irgendwie ganz gut beschreibt so wie, wie unser Leben eigentlich aussieht so, und dass wir natürlich irgendwie größtenteils eigentlich hinter Mauern verbringen und erm… Ja, also darum geht es in dem Song. Es ist ziemlich persönlich, auf jeden Fall.
Erm, actually it’s a bit like… actually it’s the most personal song on the album. It’s actually a bit about the life that we’re leading, yes? Well erm, in English it’s “World behind my wall” which somehow describes rather well, like, what our life actually looks like and that we’re somehow mostly spending it behind walls of course and erm.. Yes well, that’s what the song is about. It’s definitely quite personal.
Max: Ok. Ihr macht immer zwei Versionen von den Videos – in Deutsch und Englisch.
Ok. You’re always making two versions of the videos – in German and English.
Bill: Ja. Yes.
Max: Ist das immer stressig oder sagt ihr, ihr macht das eigentlich auch… [habt] Bock auch mal ’ne andere Version zu machen?
Is that always stressful or are you saying that you’re actually also doing this… Do you fancy just making a different version as well?
Bill: Also eigentlich… es raubt natürlich sehr viel Zeit, ja? Also ich glaub’ wir sind da so’n bisschen selber dran Schuld, weil wir uns einfach nicht entscheiden können was unsere Lieblingsversion ist. Also wir selber wollen einfach immer Deutsch und Englisch machen und können echt schwer sagen was wir dann… für was wir uns entscheiden. Und von daher dauert alles doppelt so lange. Also, die Albumproduktion – ich musste jeden Song zweimal singen – erm, das Video und alles was dazu gehört. Also, [es] ist schon viel Arbeit aber grundsätzlich ist es schon auch ganz gut, weil es sind wirklich zwei ganz unterschiedliche Versionen. Ich glaub’ an „Lass uns laufen“ und „World behind my wall“ sieht man das auch ganz gut. Erm, die heißen ja auch komplett anders. Also, es ist wirklich auch keine 1:1 Übersetzung, sondern die weichen auch so’n bisschen natürlich ab.
Well actually… Of course it’s very time-consuming, yes? Well, I think it’s our own fault a bit because we just can’t decide what version we like best. Meaning we, ourselves, always want to do German and English and find it hard to say what we […] then… which one we decide upon. And therefore everything takes twice as long. Meaning, the album production – I had to sing each song twice – erm, the video and everything that goes with it. Meaning, yes it’s a lot of work but basically it’s also quite good like this because the two versions are really quite different. I think, it’s also quite easy to tell from “Lass uns laufen” and “World behind my wall”. Meaning, it’s also really not a 1:1 translation but they certainly differ a bit.
Max: Erm gibt’s… Habt, habt ihr so Ticks, die euch auch an den anderen vielleicht nerven? Also, musst du immer den linken Schuh zuerst anziehen oder er muss immer morgens, weiß ich nich’, ’n rotes Handtuch haben? Gibt’s so Sachen, die…
Erm, are there… Do, do you have like quirks that maybe also annoy you about each other?
Bill: Also Georg muss immer vor jedem Konzert kacken gehen…
Well, Georg always has to take a dump before every concert…
Tom: Genau. Das…
Exactly. That…
Bill: … aber das ist ’ne Sache, also, die gehört auch…

Bill: Genau. Also eigentlich mittlerweile ist es so, dass wir Georg auch wirklich kacken schicken müssen, weil wir dann erm, auch Glück haben auf der Bühne. Also, es gehört echt so dazu. Von daher… erm, das erste… wir checken dann immer, dass es ’n vernünftiges Klo gibt, aber Georg geht auch gerne auf’s Dixi und so…
Exactly. Well, by now it’s actually really a case of us having to send Georg to take a dump because it means, erm, we’re also lucky on stage then. Meaning, it’s really like part of it. Therefore… erm, the first thing [is that] we’re always checking that there’s a decent loo, though Georg also likes using a portaloo and so on…
Tom: Ja. Yes.
Bill: … rutscht dann noch mal über den Brillenrand und… *laughing*

Tom: Der sollte mal so’n Buch machen wie erm, Charlotte Roche, irgendwie.

Bill *still laughing*: Ja, genau. Yes, exactly.
Tom: Aber bloß für die männliche Fraktion.

Max: Gibt’s ’ne Schlagzeile, die ihr gern mal lesen würdet? Ich meine, ihr habt schon viele Awards gewonnen, viele Sachen gemacht – aber gibt’s irgendwie vielleicht ’ne Zusammenarbeit mit irgendjemand wo ihr sacht `Oh, das muss mal sein!`?
Is there a headline that you’d like to read once? I mean, you’ve already won many awards, have done lots of things – but is there maybe a collaboration with someone where you’re saying `Oh, that just has to be!`?
Bill: Erm, also ich würde gern lesen `Tokio Hotel neun Mal für die Grammys nominiert`. *laughing*

Bill: … das dann einfach aufhören. Oder auch andere Sachen. Aber es ist halt wirklich… Ja, ich finde man kann das echt nicht am Jahr festmachen. Also.

Tom: Also, ich nehm’ mir Sachen wirklich von einem zum anderen Tag vor. Wenn ich mir jetzt schon langfristig was für’s nächste Jahr vornehme, dann klappt das sowieso immer nicht. Ich muss das… Das ist wirklich ’ne Entscheidung… Ganz spontan muss man dann sagen `Ich hör’ jetzt auf zu trinken` oder irgedwas.
Well, I really decide on things from one day to the other. If I decide on something for the next year in the long run, then it never works out anyway. I have to… That’s really a decision… One has to say quite spontaneously ‘I stop drinking now’ or something like that.
*Bill and Georg starting to laugh*
Tom: Erm, ja also, das wär’ jetzt bei mir nicht… *laughing as well* Das wär’ jetzt bei mir nicht der Fall. Das war jetzt so ’ne kleine…

Max: Was wünscht ihr euch persönlich für’s nächste Jahr und auch euren Fans?
What are you personally wishing for for the upcoming year and also [for] your fans?
Bill: Erm, ich wünsche allen auf jeden Fall so Gesundheit! So das ist das aller, allerwichtigste. [Das] Ist natürlich auch Gelaber was jeder macht, aber es ist nun mal so.
Erm, I definitely wish for health for everybody! Like, that’s the most, most important of all. Of course [that] is clichéd drivel that everybody says, but that’s really just the way it is.
Tom: Wenn man mal drüber nachdenkt, ist [es] das auf jeden Fall.
If one just thinks about it, it’s definitely like that.
Bill: Wenn man drüber nachdenkt, ist es so. Also, ich hoffe natürlich, dass es irgendwie… Ich wünsche mir irgendwie Gesundheit für meine Familie und erm, vielleicht auch ’n bisschen mehr Zeit im nächsten Jahr… so für andere Sachen und erm… Unseren Fans wünsche ich natürlich irgendwie viel Spaß bei unseren Konzerten.

** Just a random short note about “Ja ja.” In Germany there’s this little saying you can jokingly use if someone keeps answering with “ja ja” because they’re mocking you or just can’t be bothered to pay attention to what you’ve got to say. It’s a bit rude but it’s just a bit of fun and goes: “‘Ja ja’ sagt man nicht. ‘Ja ja’ heißt ‘Leck mich am Arsch’.” Translation: “One doesn’t say ‘yeah yeah’. ‘Yeah yeah’ means ‘Kiss my a**’.”
